U.S. Senate Committee Approves Abortions at Military Hospitals

There are over 250 taxpayer-funded military base hospitals here and overseas. For years, Congress has prohibited the performance of abortions at these facilities. This pro-abortion Congress -- with its friend and ally, Planned Parenthood -- is working hard to reverse that position.

"It's the recognition that reproductive health care for women is basic health care. The world has changed, and women play a larger role in the military," says PP mouthpiece Cecile Richards, president of the organization.

Senator Roland Burris (D-IL) introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (S. 3454) that would overturn the ban on abortions at military base hospitals. The Burris amendment won by a 15-12 vote in the Senate Armed Services Committee with all Democrats except Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) supporting the amendment and all Republicans opposing it.

The bill now goes to the Senate floor where there will be an amendment to remove the Burris language. The House version of the bill maintains current law which prohibits abortions at military hospitals. Will this nightmare session of Congress ever end?
